Patient Care Guidelines
The SSAT Patient Care Guidelines were written for the primary care physician on a variety of digestive diseases to assist on when to refer the patient for surgical consultation. Their goal is to guide Primary Care Physicians to the appropriate utilization of surgical procedures on the alimentary tract or related organs; they are based on critical review of the literature and expert opinion. Both of the latter sources of information result in a consensus that is recorded in the form of these Guidelines. The consensus addresses the range of acceptable clinical practice and should not be construed as a standard of care. The reader must realize that clinical judgment may justify a course of action outside of the recommendations contained herein.

Evidence-Based Current Surgical Practice Manuscripts
A key goal of the 2011 strategic plan of the Society for Surgery of Alimentary Tract (J Gastrointest Surg 2001; 15: 1077-1085) was to accelerate efforts to meet the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) and continuing medical education (CME) needs of the membership. Starting in 2012 the SSAT Health Care Quality and Outcomes Committee began soliciting authoritative manuscripts of topics that correspond to the annual MOC course held in conjunction with Digestive Disease Week, as well as a limited number of additional specific topics. These manuscripts represent an expert interpretation of the latest evidence on best surgical practice and treatment of particular surgical conditions of the alimentary tract. These Evidence-based Current Surgical Practice Manuscripts are published in the society’s Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery (JOGS) and are freely available to SSAT Members and non-members alike for a limited time only.
